What Dogs Do - Weekly Featured Blogger

Posted on 06:14 by Unknown
This week we are proud to introduce you to What Dogs Do!

I am a writer and dog-lover living in London, UK. My interest in dog behaviour and training started when I was a kid and got a Dachshund puppy as a birthday present. As an adult I was dog-less (and sad) for quite some time, until I decided to adopt a retired racing greyhound two years ago. I soon realized that my fascination with dogs had not disappeared. I started boring all my friends with stories of how and what Eddie was doing. Last year I added another greyhound to my pack, Cassie. The stories and ideas multiplied. So I decided to write them down in a blog, What Dogs Do
.

But my interest in dogs doesn’t stop with having a pair of greyhounds. I volunteer at a greyhound rehoming kennel to learn more about retired racing dogs, their behaviour and needs. I also take my dogs to a home caring for the elderly with dementia and Alzheimer’s. The meetings between Eddie and Cassie and the old folks are rewarding and fascinating, and have fuelled my curiosity about how we people and our dogs relate.

My blog is partly a diary of my trials and tribulations with Eddie and Cassie, partly a way to share what I have learned by training them, and partly an exploration of what I am continually finding out about canine behaviour. What Dogs Do mixed bunch of ideas, then. Some posts are observations of what my dogs do, some describe how I train my dogs. I report from the kennels and at times I add some more philosophical considerations about animal-human interaction.

In Black & White - Weekly Featured Blogger

Posted on 06:59 by Unknown
Bilbo
This week we're happy to introduce you to the crew from In Black and White.  Take a few minutes to check them out.
Billy
I started blogging when I realized that, in a few short years, I'd managed to progress from being slightly fearful of dogs to a fully-blown "crazy dog lady". As my daily conversation began to be dominated by the minute doings of my big bully breed Billy, rescue, advocacy and all things pooch I realized that I needed another outlet for all my doggy tales.
Buster, Billy & Clover
The star of the blog is Bilbo, a mischievous, attention-hogging big squishface, who won over the hearts of his rescuers at ww.onetail.org so completely that they made him the logo. He's got a personality as big as his giant head and his antics often have me in stitches - except when I'm tearing out my hair!

Bilbo's best buddies Buster and Clover manage to get a look in too from time to time and there are many cameos from all the great dogs that I get to meet through volunteering. Adopting Billy was just the first step to discovering a whole new world of dog-related activities, as well as a great community of people, and it's been great fun finding a place online to share it all!
Billy
Here are three of their favorite posts:

Snow Fall

Bilbo Sleeps

Come Back Sunshine

Please take some time out of your week to stop by & say hi to this happy gang of dogs.  As always if you'd like to be featured on Pet Blogs United, just drop us a line at PBU at comcast dot net.

Have a great weekend.

Guess Who's Going To Blogher?

Posted on 08:28 by Unknown
I get to go to BlogHer as part of a Proctor & Gamble contingent in a couple of weeks.  Unfortunately Oskar's nose is bent out of joint, because he is not going.

I can tell you that he loves our relationship with P&G because of the great new dog food that we got to try before it hit the shelves.  Iams Simple & Natural is a big hit at our house.
They also have a new formula called Sensitive and Natural which is designed for dogs with skin and allergy problems.
Your local Petsmart, Petco & Target should be fully stocked with these great new foods.

So back to my original question, is anyone out there going to BlogHer?  I'd love to meet up with you!

I'll also be attending BlogPaws later in August & could meet up with you there too!

The Thundershirt Rocks

Posted on 12:12 by Unknown
Hello, Oskar's mom person Pam here.  Oskar has always been terrified of thunder and fireworks.  After reading about the Thundershirt, and talking to a couple of vets about it we decided to order one for Oskar.

It came after we got home from our camping trip and today I had a chance to try it out.  Here's Oskar during a loud evening of fireworks.

I cannot stress to you what an amazing thing this was for me to see.  Any thunder or firworks has always sent Oskar into a shaking fit, hiding in the bathtub or behind my chair for the duration.  In less than a minute of putting the Thundershirt on Oskar he climbed onto the couch and assumed this position.

I was thrilled to have him be able to relax instead of being scared to death.  The Thundershirt is supposed to work for everything from loud noises to seperation anxiety, & I'm here to tell you that it worked for this schnauzer almost immediately.

It's made of soft, fuzzy cotton with velcro all around so that you can put it snugly around the body.  We bought the Thundershirt ourselves and are receiving no compensation at all for this post, I just wanted to put it out there for any other dogs who may have these same type of issues.  It gets 4 paws up from this family!

*This post is re-posted from Oskar's Blog for all of our PBU members who have pets with anxiety.

Critters In The Cottage - Featured Blogger

Posted on 04:46 by Unknown
This week we'd like to introduce you Critters In The Cottage.

Leo
I started blogging in January of 2011 for a few different reasons. What gave me the idea to blog initially was my niece who is an only child and who visits once a month. She missed the animals in between visits and I thought a blog would be a fun way for her to stay connected to them.I also wanted to find a community of animal lovers and people who also foster animals as I felt a bit isolated in that enterprise.
Tulip
I foster for an organization that helps hundreds of animals and who also run a cat sanctuary of gargantuan proportions (seven to eight hundred cats find shelter there) so I pretty much fly solo whenever there are problems. When you foster unhealthy senior cats , problems often arise. It's nice to know there are other people in the world who make animals a priority in their lives and that alone has helped my morale during challenging moments.

Issa (curly) & Duffy
The blog itself, however, doesn't focus on the foster cats' health issues. It's a playful, creative way for me to share the animals' personalities with an audience. We are two cats, two dogs and two senior foster cats. I blog to create a balance in a world where animals are too often hurt and neglected. When you visit us, we hope you see how loved and cherished our fur family is and are consequently reminded that we are fortunate to live in the world with the gift of animals and everything they give us to right our lives. We hope we bring a smile to your face. We look forward to your visit.

Esme (front) & Mitalee
Here are 4 of their favorite posts:

Please take a moment out of your week to stop by Critters In The Cottage & show them some Pet Blogs United comment support.

Purina Pet Gear Is Looking For Bloggers!

Posted on 06:39 by Unknown
It’s not very often that we, as consumers, are offered a sure thing. Believe me, I know. As a mom of two very young children, my husband and I decided not to adopt a new pet after my cat, Whoobie, who was my fur-baby for 12 years, passed away. Instead, we put the word out to our neighbors – “If you need a dog-sitter or a cat-sitter, please call us first. No charge!” It enabled us to get our dog and cat “fix” without the commitment of adopting while our children are so young.

Our most recent visitor was Tuffman (see photo), a 3 month old Yorkie. Training pads were a must for this little brut. Tuffman may have been small, but he could make a mean puddle. I wasn’t very impressed with the training pads that our neighbors provided, so I pulled out some of the samples that I had stored away from Purina®. Now, full-disclosure here, I work for the PR agency that handles all the publicity for Purina’s Pet Gear line, but I was genuinely happy with the results.

We’re spreading the word about the Purina® Pet Gear DryStep™ Challenge (www.facebook.com/purinapetgear). We want you to try Purina Pet Gear training pads. And, if you’re not happy, Purina will purchase a pack of the consumer’s (that’s you and me!) preferred brand of training pads.

So, here’s what we want from you – the pet bloggers of America: let us send you some of the Purina® Pet Gear products to try out (products include the training pads, shampoo and a stain and odor eliminator for carpet and upholstery – see photo). If you like them, write about it on your blog, and as a part of your blog post, we will offer a give-away of the Purina® Pet Gear Ultra Dry Training Pads for up to ten lucky readers of your blog.

Thanks and happy blogging!

Shannon Herbon works for MLMC, a PR agency representing Purina Pet Gear products. If you're interested in trying out these products, she can be contacted at Shannon@licursi.net or 813-994-7564

Shedmonster Product Review

Posted on 18:34 by Unknown
Recently we were contacted by Shedmonster to review their pet grooming tool.

Since Oskar's fur is too tangly & he is not really cooperative when it comes to brushing, plus the fact the as a miniature schnauzer he doesn't shed, I used this on our cats, Chloe & Moe.

Moe

I have to say the Moe loved the process & we got tons of fur off of her.

Moe hair along with a note from my son.

A second batch of spare fur.
It worked like a charm on her and she acted like she was getting some great attention while we used it on her.

Chloe, who is more double coated, with both long and short fur did not have the same results.  The Shedmonster didn't really remove any fur from her coat.

Chloe, the Shedmonster failure
The Shedmonster worked better on Moe than any other grooming tool we have tried, so I would recommend this product highly for a short haired animal.

*I was not compensated for this post, just sent a Shedmonster to try out.  The views here are based on my personal results with the product.

Introducing Iams Simple & Natural!

Posted on 04:15 by Unknown
Well we've been hinting about it for weeks and now we're please to introduce you Oskar's new dog food Iams Simple & Natural.

IAMS is thrilled to announce the expansion of its Naturals line of pet foods by launching two new recipes:
  • New IAMS Sensitive

    Naturals
     - ideal for dogs with ingredient sensitivities.
  • New IAMS Simple

    & Natural
     - simply made for dogs and contains our highest

    quality ingredients from nature.
Oskar has done great for the month that he has been eating his food.  His energy level is up, his coat is shiny & his breath smells better.  And I love feeding it to him since I know that he is getting all the nutrition he needs without any unnecessary stuff thrown in as fillers.
.

For more information you can go to the Iams webpage or their Facebook page.

I did do a great Skype interview with Dr. Marci Campion from Iams, but unfortunately the software didn't record it properly.

Oskar & I can highly recommend Iams Simple & Natural to all of our readers, so check out a bag.  You should be seeing it on your store shelves soon!

Little Em & Sapphire - Foster Friday

Posted on 15:44 by Unknown
This week's Foster Friday come from Brian at Brian's Home.

We are Lil Em and Sapphire and we were adopted from a rescue group in South Carolina four years ago. Our owner says she wants to make a lifestyle change and that does not include having kitties anymore. Guess we were really not REAL members of this family.

Our foster had a vet check us out when the rescue received us back and it was ascertained little Sapphire has an enlarged kidney! What does that mean? No one seems to know. She has no outward signs of any problem and uses the litter box and eats and drinks like a normal kitty. Me, Lil Em checked out fine. The vet told us to put Sapphire down, however I am so attached to my sister. You see, we’ve been together since the womb.

We know it is nearly impossible to find us a home, given the fact that one of us may be sick. But we are counting on Brian to do his magic and find just one loving individual out there in the blogosphere who would be willing to put their heart and love out there to keep me and Sapphire together. I’m afraid our only other option is to put Sapphire to sleep if we are not adopted together given her potential diagnosis.

We are currently loving in a garage in South Carolina where the heat index is very hot, with fans blowing. We have no other place to go. We have been with other kitties with no problem whatsoever and even a large chocolate lab who we thought was kinda neat.

Please, will you be that person to open your heart and home to keep me and Sapphire together and help us not to have to make that awful decision for Sapphire??? Please help us get our prayer answered.

If you can help, please let Brian know at brianfrum (at) gmail (dot) com.
