I have been an animal lover my entire life and it has always included dogs. I am priveleged to have 10 acres of land where I now have 5 dogs, 6 Alpacas, 30+ chickens, and 2 roosters. They are all my 'pets'. As I have learned so much from having 'new pets', I wanted to blog and share my do's and don'ts with anyone and everyone who may love animals as much as I do. My philosophies for animals are pretty basic and follow two primary rules. Rule 1 is I will not have an animal that could or would want to klll me. Rule 2 is that I will not have an animal I would have to kill to profit from. As a result, all of my animals fall into the 'pet' category. Of the five dogs I currently have the pleasure of sharing my life with, two are King Charles Cavalier Spaniels who will both turn seven this coming June and July, and were a breeding pair. Daisy and Mo are like an old married couple and had 45 puppies. That sounds like a lot and it was but both Daisy and Mo were great parents and are currently 'retired' (fixed) and enjoying their senior years in luxury. My other three dogs are rescues that I got from my local vet when I moved out to the county. My big baby is Dutchess, a mastiff/great dane mix, and the other two are chihuahua mixes. I love them all equally!
My move to the country allowed me to live the "Alpaca lifestyle" which is to have the privelege of seeing these gorgeous if not goofy looking creatures right outside my kitchen window. They look like Llamas but are more docile. Each has their own personality and quirks which make them like really tall dogs with the personalities of standoffish cats. Check out the blog pics for more info! With the move to the country, the best thing I did was to get chickens which I consider 'pets'. They eat all of the ticks and fleas, so I don't have to worry about parasite infestation for either the dogs or Alpacas. They lay about 10 dozen eggs per week but that is just a side benefit as they are gorgeous and I can't wait to see what the new girls will look like (again, see the blog for more info.) I started to blog as a way to share with family and friends who didn't understand why some of these animals are so integral to my life and how much joy they bring. Most people will understand the concept of dogs as man's best friend but the other animals and their benefits/life stories are a large part of my life and as I have come to realize, I learn something new about them every week. That is something I love to share and keep as positive as possible in the world today where there is too much negative.
