Anyone who knows me, knows about my dog, Lieutenant. He was rarely called that, though. To me, he was Lou, Louie, or Lou-lou. To my mother he was Lu-la-belle, to my father he was Piggy and to my boyfriend (now husband) he was Fatso. In case you haven’t guessed, Lou-lou was a pug.
There’s just something about that squishy face and those velvety ears. Add in the curly tail and charming grunts and I am hopelessly in love. And DONT ever tell me “They’re so ugly, they’re cute!” That’s just nonsense. They are precious - every single bit of their pudgy little frames.
I know not everyone sees them the way I do. Chalk it up to the blissful ignorance of youth, but I will never forget the first Pug event I attended. A Pug rescue group was there. I wish I could say that I went home feeling warm and fuzzy because of all the wonderful rescue families working to help the little pug-lets. While I was extremely grateful for their efforts, the overwhelming sense I walked away with was one of sheer disgust for the people who put them in NEED of rescue.
I won’t rehash the story. There’s no use giving life to the abuser’s crimes. But one little pug just broke my heart and the worst thing was, I didn’t have the money to do anything about it. I wanted so badly, to take him home, cuddle him and give him all the love and care he desperately needed. Unfortunately, I was in college at the time. My Louie spent part time with me and part time with my parents. I could barely afford to care for his normal vet bills and food. There was simply no way to add another puggy to the family and give them both adequate care. I had to leave the rescue pug there, hopefully to be adopted by someone who could give him everything he deserved.
Last year, my husband and I developed a site called Care to Click. Through our various life experiences, we realized that when you want to help out, you don’t always have the means. So, we came up with a way that allows everyone to help causes they care about – for free. We offer ten different causes to choose from. When you choose the Pets tab, just a click, share or tweet results in a donation to help fight animal cruelty. Printing coupons or shopping online at one of our affiliates, (like Pet Smart, Only Natural Pet Store and Pet Source) helps provide food for shelter animals. There’s even a way to track the impact you’ve made and auto-post your actions to facebook. You’re doing good – why not show your friends how they can, too?
Take a look at our video. It’s got some interesting facts and will give you a better understanding of how the site generates donations.
Louie passed away 3 years ago, not long after the birth of our daughter. He lived a healthy and happy life to the age of 14. We miss him every day. He was with me through college, my wedding and three children! He owns a very big part of my heart and can never be replaced. And, I still think about the rescue pug, wondering whether or not he found his forever home. I know many of you have a similar story to share. Come join us at Care to Click. Together, our tiny actions can have enormous impact in the life of an animal.
